My dad served in the Navy in World War II and was stationed in Iwo Jima. He never talked much about the war, but on our trip to Washington D.C. he felt it was very important to take my brother and me (orange shirt) to the Iwo Jima Memorial.
Needs no explanation. When you visit it you realize you are standing in a very special place. Some vistas leave you speechless.
In the summer of 1965 our family of five drove across the country in a Volkswagen squareback. Visiting the capitol was a highlight, as was the three-day reprieve from the car.
